HIKING IS FREE ON GRANDFATHER STATE PARK TRAILS
Spring is on our doorstep, and with it some incredible opportunities to shift from skiing to hiking and biking in the high country. We’ll cover all the action here and provide you with the local knowledge you need to make your Sugar Mountain getaway a blast. Let’s start with nearby Grandfather Mountain, our biosphere treasure. The back country of Grandfather Mountain is now Grandfather Mountain State Park. There is no charge to access Grandfather Mountain State Park from trail heads outside the travel attraction, but registration is required for safety reasons. One of those trail heads is located just 5 minutes from Sugar Mountain on Hwy 105. It’s called the Grandfather Profile Trail. You can self-register before you head up the mountain. For details, www.grandfather.com. While online, download a trail map.
Visitors to the Grandfather Mountain travel attraction with its swinging bridge, museum and nature park are still able to access Grandfather’s back country trails from the Swinging Bridge area, which is included in the price of admission to the attraction. Hikers wishing to access Grandfather Mountain State Park from the Swinging Bridge are required to purchase a general admission ticket to the attraction before driving to the summit.
Hiking on Sugar Mountain and nearby Beech Mountain is also free. We have trail maps in our office to provide suggestions.
